Working with children with special needs takes a lot of understanding and patience. These children deserve the same opportunities in life to explore, learn and play alongside mainstream children. Integrating children with varying disabilities can be very challenging to say the least.
Some children are violent, not able to communicate, and may have different or unusual features, some are deaf, physically disabled or have vision problems. Whatever the disability your job is to ensure that your participant is safe and gaining from the experience
Toy Boxes Furniture
For a child who has a physical disability the room can be arranged providing easier access for wheel chairs and always having a clear floor if walking is unbalanced. Group games can be altered to fit the child's needs.
Children with hearing impairments can sit closer to the teacher or instructor, and sign language books can act as a resource in the room for children and teachers. For children who have communication problems (hand-sized pictorials that include emotions) are a great tool allowing communication throughout the day.
The child should have his or her own space so that he or she can communicate with other children. A child with vision problems can be introduced to the room a few times to become familiar with the setup, placing real toys outside of toy boxes can help the child identify what toy box it is. Sitting the child close to a teacher while he\she is reading a book and offering books that are sensory.
Some children because of their disability may have unusual features, and may be asked by other children what happened. Educating children and adults about a child's disability can be extremely helpful. A variety of books is available to allow learning and acceptance of children who may look different from others.
Introducing books before the child joins a group makes an easy adjustment for all. A child who displays violent reactions to others, toys, furniture or leaders can be very challenging and keep you constantly running to prevent any injury. If the child hurts another child he or she should take responsibility for their actions, and the child who was injured should talk about how they do not like to be hurt. Reading time should include books about respect, how to treat each other and how to handle different feelings we may be experiencing. Patience and understand is the key with special needs children.
