Blanket Box

A blanket box is really just a storage box that varies in size. Cheaper alternatives in modern times would be those made from plastic and are generally smaller in size. However, there may be times we may consider owning multiple blanket boxes for the bedroom. Firstly, blanket boxes are typically made of high quality wood with a great finish, they make great furniture for decoration and are pleasant to the eye. As most people may know, wooden furniture is a stunning material which make pieces of furniture appear classy, exquisite and sophisticated. Also, a box of that size is practical for storing more than just blankets. Most people who own a blanket box use it to store books, toys, clothes and even electronic appliances. In this article, I will describe a brief history, benefits, choosing the right material (in this case, choosing the right wood) and recommendations of whether to purchase or make your own blanket box.

They were known as blanket chests over three centuries ago, where they were very popular during the 17th to 19th centuries. The oldest known example in existence was a piece that was actually invented in the 17th century. This antique piece is available for auction with the starting value of 00 at Thomaston Auction Galleries. During the colonial period, ship log entries show that these chests were commonly the sole item of furniture which accompanied settlers in their travels to distant lands. Before they were widely used, craftsmen in Massachusetts and Connecticut designed blanket boxes which were paneled and carved out of oak wood. These types of boxes incorporated wide stiles and rails in their design.

As time passed however, the basic design of the blanket box underwent a few modifications. Drawers were added and the length was increased. These items were typically called mule boxes during that period. Originally, it was popular among colonists due to the lack of closets to store clothing, blankets and household linens. Attics were not readily accessible and cellars were too damp for storage. Thus, the blanket box was invented to provide a solution to the predicament. The blanket box in it's original design was described as a large wooden box with a hinged lid. The primary function was for storing clothes and valuables, it also doubled up as a seat (chairs were considered a luxury furniture back then). Blanket boxes back then were constructed with a plain pine board top. This unadorned top surface was ideal for seating and did not required cushions which made it all the more versatile.

There were numerous reasons why this piece of furniture had benefits being made of wood rather than metal, plastic or any other compositions. When the industrial revolution took place, various materials such as glass, steel and plastic were used increasingly often in many industries. These materials were used to produce an avant-garde style for furnishings. However, wooded furniture did not lose its allure and appeal even as time passed. Despite being standard, wood still remains to be a stunning material that is unique and timeless. No matter how technologically advanced cultures become over time, wooden home furniture will always be in demand. A well placed wooden furniture allows cool, dull areas in a house to appear warm, welcoming and comfortable. The best part of it is that it ages beautifully over the years and enables us to produce an easy, simple and natural design. Wood-made blanket boxes are also easier to clean, as it only requires dusting and waxing on a monthly basis.

When looking to purchase a blanket box, wood selection is an aspect of prime importance. There are many available choices in the market and some are more favored than others. Pine is known for providing a wonderful "rustic" quality. Its common strong point revolves around its natural grain patterns. Over time, a blanket box made of pine will stylishly possess an organic finish that requires minimal treatment. Oak on the other hand boasts a rural quality. It provides an aura of supreme quality but does have its drawbacks. Maintenance is the prime drawback when dealing with oak wood as it will require oiling and waxing periodically to maintain its luster.

Mango wood is another material that can be used but is less common on the market for blanket boxes. Its style and quality is starting to gain popularity because of its environmentally friendly nature. Mango trees are generally tall trees with a trunk that is wide in diameter. When the tree no longer produces fruit, farmers typically chop the tree down for timber. A young mango tree is planted in it's place and the cycle continues. This is an excellent example of environmental sustainability. Lastly, for a rich and elegant look, one can consider hand carved mahogany. It makes wooden furniture look formal and gives off a pleasant smelling aroma which naturally repels insects. The sturdiness of the wood itself also ensures that it is is extremely durable. In fact, mahogany furniture will generally last about 3 decades if maintenance is performed periodically.

Purchasing wooden furniture can sometimes be a tricky affair as the paint and veneer can mask many faults with the wood itself. There have also been cases where different materials were but sold as solid wood furniture. These are usually achieved by using replica's that are usually man-made. Investing time and effort into constructing one yourself can save you a lot of headaches in the long run. Additionally, crafting your own blanket box is very satisfying due to the sense of accomplishment that comes with it. The blanket box has a long and illustrious history that is sure to add a touch of class to the bedroom.
